the role of lay catholics

I think we underestimate how much we can do by doing the simple things well.

Many of the saints, including Mother Teresa talked about the beauty of doing small things with great love. Not many of us will end up on Vatican commissions but many of us will change nappies, clean the house, work in our jobs, console our friends, study, make music, coach junior sporting teams, volunteer at Church and simply seek to live simple and good lives.

Sure, there is glory and notoriety to be had in the world. In fact, we live in a time of cultural obsession with celebrity. But deeper and more beautiful and more important is the hidden and simple tasks undertaken by lay Catholics who seek to carry out their roles with a love of Jesus and a heart open to being empowered by the Holy Spirit.

The role of lay Catholics is simply to bring the presence of Jesus to whatever they happen to be doing at any given moment. Bring Jesus to your classroom or staffroom or business. But always remember, you cannot bring what you don’t possess. So seek Him in all things. Make time for Him. Make Him your priority.
