In this short video I explore a great quote from Pope Francis where he makes it so clear that every Catholic teacher needs to develop a deeper personal relationship with Jesus. The task and mission of a Catholic teacher is not merely a human task. The formation of ‘mature consciences’ and the other crucial tasks of education and evangelisation that make up a normal day for a Catholic teacher require a firm commitment to an ongoing deepening of our encounter with Jesus.
A Supra-natural Task
The task that the Catholic teacher is invited upon by the Holy Spirit transcends the merely human. It is, ultimately, a supra-natural task that requires a deep empowering by the Holy Spirit which is given to us by Jesus. Remember the experience of Pentecost? It was the encounter with Jesus that was the precondition of the Holy Spirit empowering the believers to go out and change the world. Nothing has changed. The modern Catholic teacher also needs the same encounter with Jesus to go forth and bring the great good news of salvation to young people who are often disillusioned by a world that promises so much but can often leave them feeling marginalised and commodified.
“I invite all Christians, everywhere, at this very moment, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since “no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord.”
